About Us

CrossFit Oldtown is a 3,700 sq/ft. group training facility equipped with men’s and women’s showers and central air (does that makes us the coolest CrossFit facility in Alexandria?), located two blocks from the waterfront in North Oldtown, Alexandria, Virginia. We are a core strength and conditioning program that offers 100% CrossFit through group coached classes that are 45minutes in length. CrossFit workouts are comprised of constantly varied functional movements (like running, rowing, jumping, pushing, pulling, and squatting) executed at high intensity. Our training methods produce instant and unparalleled results for all levels of fitness; from children to elite athletes, and everything in between.

Our program efficiently combines the most effective training methods of High Intensity Cardio, Body-weight Exercises, Plyometrics, and Weightlifting. There isn’t a fitness, personal training, or strength and conditioning program anywhere that uses more variety and has more FUN than CrossFit Oldtown!

Coaches:

Jerry Hill

Jerry: (Owner)Fitness is my passion, and it has been for thirty years. At the age of fourteen, exercise intrigued me beyond mastering a basic level of competency. Even at that early age it struck me that if I could become stronger and faster and develop more endurance, then I would be able to play harder. Play being the operative word in the latter sentence. I do find exercise synonymous with fun. Of course, my definition of play may not be the same as others’, and even my own definition of it has changed over the years. I’ve moved from the kid on the playground scaling jungle gyms to a competitive athlete and a United States Marine, to my current roles as a coach, CrossFit competitor, husband, and the father of two amazing girls. As I passed through each stage, fitness has always enhanced my life, and it has been the key to my continued desire to push my potential for peak performance.

Having met with great success in my fitness pursuits, I found myself asking, “How can I teach others to know gratification from their fitness, and what is it about my approach to exercise that makes it so inherent to me, so centering in my daily life?” In answer to this question, I founded CrossFit Oldtown. With my passion now my vocation, I’m able to share the knowledge I’ve gained though my pursuits and provide others with the tools necessary to achieve results from their workouts.

CrossFit is also a great way to play hard!

Melissa Lopes

Melissa: (Head Coach and Chief In Charge from 12:00-close) Melissa started CrossFit in May of 2008 in order to supplement her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training. Melissa has always had a passion for movement. As a child she was involved in dance, soccer, and various outdoor activities. Her career as an executive protection agent led her to study BJJ, which she began competing in not long after she started her training. She attributes her three International BJJ medals to CrossFit and Jerry Hill’s programming. It wasn’t long after she discovered CrossFit that she developed a desire to coach and help others to attain their goals.

In August of 2008 she attended the Level I Instructors course, left her career of 9 years and jumped headlong into coaching CrossFit and BJJ.  Since then she has received her Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit Endurance and Basic Barbell Certifications, and is currently pursuing a degree in exercise science.

Melissa finds few things that are as rewarding as coaching people to their personal goals, whether it be an athlete loosing 75lbs, getting their first pull up, or completing their first IronMan.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”- Aristotle

Adam Murphy

Adam: (Head Coach)I was a Multi sport athlete growing up and throughout high school, competing in Football, Track & Field, and Baseball. I graduated from Radford University with a degree in Sports Administration and am currently enrolled at George Mason University pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. I found Crossfit in late 2008 and have been hooked ever since, soon after my introduction I obtained my Level 1 in 2009, Crossfit Football cert in 2009, and have just recently completed the Coaches prep course to prepare for the Level 2. I’m always looking for more ways to improve myself as well as help others achieve their goals. I look forward to everyday at Crossfit Oldtown because of the great community here, everyone is constantly helping each other get better.

Kevin Hare

Kevin: (Assistant Coach)Throughout High School I played football, wrestled, and ran track in Atlanta, GA. My senior year I placed 3rd in the state at the pole vault and continued in college capturing eight conference championships and runner-up titles between the indoor and outdoor season. After trying the traditional gym approach post-grad, I found CrossFit in 2008 and fell in love with it immediately. I received my Level 1 Certification in 2009 and started training when we started the non-profit affiliate CrossFit Gonzaga in August 2009. To pay the bills I teach Computer Science at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. I love coaching new members on the Olympic lifts, deadlifts, and anything on rings. Seeing improvements in members on the small scale and the large scale makes coaching at CrossFit OldTown a great experience.

Sean Mulcahy

Sean: (Assistant Coach) I’ve been a physical fitness addict since I started my first weight-lifting program in the basement of our house with my Dad when I was 14 years old. I continued my passion for physical fitness as a college lacrosse player and then United States Marine. In the Fall of 2004, a Navy SEAL friend excitedly told me to check out www.crossfit.com. I started doing the workouts by myself at the Base Gym, and eventually trained other Marines in the CrossFit methodology. I was lucky to attend a Coach Burgener Olympic Lifting cert, and shortly after a Level-1 cert at CrossFit Headquarters in February 2005. Those two experiences changed everything for me. I witnessed Greg Amundson and Josh Everett go head-to-head in the workout Fran, cheered as Josh did a clean and jerk demonstration with 300+ pounds, and experienced the pain of Coach Glassman’s introduction to proper air squat form via Tabata bottom-to-bottom squat in a large group circle. I was HOOKED! Since then, I’ve continued my pursuit of fitness as a CrossFit athlete, received my USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach certification, started a Non-Profit / Club Affiliate (CrossFit Gonzaga), and been an Assistant Coach at CrossFit Oldtown. The CrossFit community as a whole, and the CrossFit Oldtown community specifically is one of the best clubs you could ever be a part of. Our team pushes each other beyond perceived limits to achieve goals that individuals didn’t previously think were possible. This is CrossFit Oldtown!

Mike Hart

Mike: (Foundations Coach) Born, raised, work and live in my hometown of Alexandria, VA. I grew up playing soccer, lacrosse, wrestling and rugby on through college and men’s clubs. I did some triathlons, a marathon and shorter distance races in search of fitness. While proud of my accomplishments, I felt hollow in my overall fitness. In March of 2008, I stumbled onto Crossfit Oldtown and Jerry Hill. I fell in love with the variety, intensity, “funishment” and camaraderie of my new Crossfit family. Jerry has created an environment where we encourage and help each other to reach goals shared with friends. Crossfit filled in the gaps of my fitness. In January of 2010, I received my Crossfit Level 1 Certification. I use that knowledge working with new members in our Foundations program. In addition to my work as a financial advisor at the Speck-Caudron Investment Group, I am passionate about seeing new friends accomplish the goals they dared to dream. At Crossfit Oldtown, we are all about making you better. Inside and outside the gym. I am proud to be a part if it. Crossfit Oldtown. Simply. Better
